Intertextuality in Stranger Things

Stranger Things is heavily influenced by many popular 80s media products. Films such as  Alien, ET, The Goonies  and Nightmare on Elm Street are constantly referenced throughout the entirety of  Stranger Things . This is so that fans of 80s products like these will be pleased and gain satisfaction when there are extremely visible recreations.  Stranger Things pays homage to many extremely popular 80s media products through its extremely heavy use of intertextuality. The scene where Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Eleven are walking along the train tracks is a direct reference to Stand By Me . Eleven's blonde wig and outfit is extremely similar to the disguise that ET uses in the Spielberg classic - as well as when the three boys find Eleven it appears to replicate the scene in ET where Elliot finds ET.  The prevalent 'coming of age theme' and the building of relationships is extremely similar to ...

Crafting Participatory Culture

1. What is Jenkins's theory that the author is referring to here? How might it apply to how audiences interact with the Minecraft game? The theory being referred to is Jenkins's 'Participatory Culture' in which audiences not only consume content but also create and distribute their own. Because of the possibility for 'mods' in Minecraft it means that audiences regularly create and distribute their own content which generates popularity and therefore success. 2. How is Minecraft different to conventional computer games in terms of narrative and what kind of experience this offers gamers? Minecraft doesn't have a restricted narrative like conventional action/adventure computer games. There are no directions or instructions, they have a lot of freedom. This offers a more personal experience than many other games do.  3. How did YouTube respond to this trend?  In 2015, YouTube launched YouTube Gaming, a website specifically...

How is Minecraft marketed differently to traditional methods?

Minecraft diverges from traditional marketing methods due to the fact that it was set up by the small software company ‘Mojang’. The company did not have the commercial backing of a mainstream publisher that many games have, such as ‘Call of Duty’, and so relied primarily on word of mouth between gaming communities online and in person. The company spent no money on advertising. Mojang did use sites such as Penny Arcade web comic to generate interest. Minecraft had a significant level of cultural impact due to its success after using no traditional marketing techniques, such as television adverts and billboards.   The developers of Minecraft originally relied on the unique versatility of gameplay that Minecraft offers. It offers the ability to play on different game modes such as story mode, spectator modes and online games on PC such as ‘Hunger Games’ survival challenges. It also gives users freedom do develop their slightly own versions and rules by allowing modifications ...

An Introduction to Minecraft

1. What are the uses and gratifications of Minecraft? Give specific examples of how the game entertains, helps audiences identify with others and educates. Minecraft entertains due to the fact that it is a game by nature. It also has different modes and mini games which mean that different audiences that gain entertainment from each other will likely be able to find entertainment in Minecraft and its many modes. Minecraft has over 60 million users worldwide and so many people are able to identify with others and meet new people over the game. Due to the increase in popularity of Minecraft YouTubers as well it is now easier for fans of the game to find others who enjoy it as much as them. Minecraft can also be used for education because it enable sit users to learn basic building and electronic skills in creative mode. Stephen Reid (founder and teacher at Immersive Minds) goes schools and introduces and promotes Minecraft as a viable educati...

Storyboarding

I intend for my music video to follow the structure of a montage where there is cross-cutting between A-roll and B-roll. I wanted to do this as I thought that producing a video that follows an actual story was difficult for a song that is so repetitive. Doing this montage allows for more creativity and freedom when both filming and editing the footage.

Website - Photography Evaluation

I think my photo shoot went quite well as I got photos that look how I wanted them to. I decided which photos to use based on the way they looked when placed on my website, as well as the quality of the photo. Some of my photos came back slightly blurry so I did not choose these. I also wanted to have one of the photos a different colour to the rest so I chose one of the red lit photos for my website.

Branding

Logo - I wanted to create my logo using geometric shapes of some kind. I experimented with triangles and squares as well as other shapes to create my logo. My logo kept developing as I was not pleased with the way that some of them turned out. The 3D look that I was going for did not look right in so e of the logos so I tried again.  Font -  The font that I am primarily using on my website is 'Lulo Clean' this is a bold sans serif font that I think works well with the look of my website and the style of a dance music artist. This is how the font looks on the name of my artist with a 3D effect added to it.

Dance Music Video Analysis

Sigala - Lullaby  Mise en scene -  The beginning of the video features quite an angelic feel to it when looking at Paloma Faith. She is viewed through a gap between two translucent cloths. The colours in this shot are very plain and muted, it is almost as if she is in a dream; linking with the title of the song 'Lullaby' The costumes used in this video focus highly on colour and stand out against the background, which is quite plain and a beach location. The colours are used to stand out against the sand coloured background and draw attention to the actors dancing and highlight the dance element of the music and video. The colours draw attention to, usually, the centre of the frame and show a real emphasis on dance throughout the video. Not many props are used in the video, a bed is the main featured prop as it links with the song title: 'Lullaby' The bed is used in many different locations, each with a differe...

Artist Websites https://www.sigalamusic.com/ http://www.martingarrix.com http://calvinharris.com All of the websites have a clear artist/brand focus and attempt to promote them with links to other social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as streaming services such as Spotify, YouTube and Soundcloud.  All of the websites have a similar feel to them and focus on the promotion of their music. The dance music artists website also usually feature a summer look and connote tropical islands, as shown on the Sigala website. Representation and Political Ideology

To what extent do the elements of media language used in Sources A and B convey different values, attitudes and beliefs about the world? In your answer you must: Analyse the ways in which media language has been used in combination in Sources A and B to convey values, attitudes and beliefs about the world. Refer to relevant contexts and academic ideas and arguments in your analysis. Draw judgements and conclusions in relation to the question. The Daily Mail cover conveys right-wing political ideas as exemplified through the use of negative language in relation to the Syrian Refugees. The bold, capitalised main headline contains the negative collective noun 'swarm' which has connotations of pests such as wasps. It suggests there is an infestation that needs to be removed, this is a common far right viewpoint on the refugee situation and clearly shows the paper's affiliation with the right on the political spectru...

Newspapers and Political Bias - Revision

1. Consider what would some examples be of more liberal values/opinions? Why would someone vote labour? Someone that votes labour would agree with the Labour party's manifesto and would have more socialist views than someone that votes conservative. 2. Consider what some examples of more conservative values/opinions would be? Why would someone vote Conservative? Conservative values would be about making the economy as strong as possible and supporting people to make as much money as they can. Someone would vote conservative if they are able to look after themselves and not have to rely on other people. 3. Where do the other parties fit on the left - right continuum? Labour, Green Party, Social Democrats, Conservative, UKIP, BNP 4. Why would a group of people change their stance in terms of key issues? 5. Why would an organisation support a certain political party through its media products? It would support a political party because the owner of the paper w...

Dance Music Research Task

All of these music videos fit into the dance music genre because they all have high energy movements. The actors featured in the videos also do not sing along to the the lyrics of the song like a lot of pop music videos do. The focus more on the dance element of the music. None of the music videos feature the artists again to focus the attention on the dance element of the music. The videos all have bright colours to represent the high energy music.  In the Sigala video there is not much representation, regarding race, until around half way through the video. Until that point the only people seen are young white men and women. Although they are from different social groups, for example there is a couple fo people that are doing tricks on BMXs and the main feature is a girl on roller-skates. There is also a couple of dancers that are represented. There is then seen a mother and son walking down the street which gives representation to a different race not seen in th...

Preliminary Production Evaluation (Moving Image)

Wear brown shoes after six: I think that the camera angles for the first scene were fairly accurate. The first one could have been taken from a slightly lower angle and the third maybe slightly further away. I managed to create a focus pull in the second shot which matched the original so this was successful. The location was not very accurate as there wasn't enough lighting on the street to be able to see the subject of the scene. However it was still taken outside. This scene was edited well as we managed to get the timings to fit well with the non diegetic soundtrack and voiceover. The mise en scene was accurate as the subject was wearing a suit and holding a clear umbrella. However the colour of the suit doesn't exactly match the original. The lighting also isn't great and is a lot darker then the original. This is probably because I just used the lighting that was there instead of creating my own lighting set up. Wear a hat indoors: ...
