Newspapers and Political Bias - Revision

1. Consider what would some examples be of more liberal values/opinions? Why would someone vote labour?

Someone that votes labour would agree with the Labour party's manifesto and would have more socialist views than someone that votes conservative.

2. Consider what some examples of more conservative values/opinions would be? Why would someone vote Conservative?

Conservative values would be about making the economy as strong as possible and supporting people to make as much money as they can. Someone would vote conservative if they are able to look after themselves and not have to rely on other people.

3. Where do the other parties fit on the left - right continuum?

Labour, Green Party, Social Democrats, Conservative, UKIP, BNP

4. Why would a group of people change their stance in terms of key issues?

5. Why would an organisation support a certain political party through its media products?

It would support a political party because the owner of the paper would want their views to be expressed through its news contents. Money is also a factor as parties can pay to have their party supported in news.

The Daily Mail is notoriously right-wing and so supports May and her government that is now more right-wing. This is shown through not using negative language when talking about Theresa May and her decision to bomb Syria. If the article was written in a left-wing newspaper such as The Guardian then her actions and decisions would be condemned. The Independent is known for trying to be as objective as possible when writing articles and attempting to solely write facts rather than opinions. This is evident with the declarative headline that does not give room for alternative interpretations into the political affiliation of the paper. The bullet points under the headline also don't give away political bias as the parties are referred to from an objective perspective where the writer does not include themselves as conservative or labour.
