Analysis of a music video -
Bon Appétit - Katy Perry
This video starts off with Katy Perry being covered in plastic, it is later implied that she is, metaphorically, the 'meat' and the men that enter the room and surround her are going to 'eat' her. At this point of the video she is wearing a revealing, beige leotard. This is provocative as she is being carried around wearing only a revealing outfit the same colour as her skin.
The next section of the video sexualises Katy even more. Now representing a piece of chicken, she is being rubbed and massaged with flour by a large group of men. During this she is looking down the lens of the camera (breaking the fourth wall) and smiling. This creates the impression that she is enjoying being touched by all these men and is taking pleasure out of it.
After the metaphor of Katy being 'cooked' begins to subside, she is then 'served' to a group of people at a restaurant as their main course. She is now wearing a tight, pink outfit as well as the stereotypical "sexy" makeup (dark eye makeup and bright red lipstick). This is provocative as this sort of outfit is usually associated with 'sexiness'.
The outfits that Katy is wearing throughout the video are antithetical to everyone else as they are all fully clothed, and some even have sunglasses on. Whereas she is represented as raw and vulnerable through her wardrobe. The outfit and makeup she is wearing fits with the lyrics of the song in some ways, however it is also unnecessary as she doesn't need to be wearing this kind of clothes. Despite this view, she is most likely wearing these clothes to appeal to the heterosexual male audience. The male gaze causes her to be viewed as the object by the man.
After laying on the table, she then begins to pole dance on a pole that rose from the table between her legs. This is all very provocative as pole dancing is seen as explicit and adult themed.
The singer looks at the audience during the video in an almost 'sexual' way as she maintains eye contact and makes different facial expressions to try and create a relationship with the audience. Throughout the video the audience is forced to look at Katy in the eyes as that is the prominent image in the video. The facial expressions and eye contact combination have connotations of pleasure as she seems to be enjoying what is being done to her.
